If there’s one thing that makes every morning a bit brighter for us, it’s a freshly brewed, creamy and silky vanilla almond milk latte. No matter if it’s hot or iced, sugar-free or slightly sweetened, this delicious vegan beverage is a must in our kitchen!

Even though our love for these hot beverages has really grown over the years, we are still no experts or coffee snobs. We wouldn’t be able to taste the difference between a dripped coffee and one made in a French press.

If we’re happy with the result, that’s good enough for us. No details needed.

But if you’re a real coffee connoisseur, then you might be shocked to see that we make our almond milk latte without a proper frother.

We’re minimalists at heart and if we can get by with the things we already have at home instead of buying a new item, you’ll be damn sure that’s what we’re doing.

Our recipes are always very approachable and we are by no means trained chefs — we’ve just learned how to make healthy plant-based food taste good. Using traditional as well as unconventional methods.

Anyway, one of our favorite hobbies (yes, we seem to be getting old) is to go to a cozy coffee place and enjoy a lovely warm beverage. Some people watching, good talks or even coming up with new ideas for the blog.

But in times when you cannot frequent your favorite coffee place and want to treat yourself and your guests at home, it’s great to have a delicious recipe up your sleeve!

The secret to making a good almond milk latte isn’t just in finding the right coffee beans but to use a nice and thick homemade vanilla almond milk creamer.

What’s more, we personally often find that vegan lattes at coffee places are too sweet or too milky and not strong enough — so homemade usually wins for us.

Our vanilla almond milk latte is sugar-free but still really creamy and naturally sweetened — just sweet enough to take off the slightly bitter edge.

How to Replace Dairy Milk in Coffee 

More and more coffee places around the world are now offering dairy-free milk alternatives for their beverages. Luckily, there are many different kinds to choose from these days!

The classic vegan milk alternative surely is soy milk. Relatively cheap and ubiquitous, it’s a very common choice to use for dairy-free lattes — but some people just cannot stand the slightest hint of soy in their drink.

Fair enough! That’s why almond milk, oat milk and coconut milk exist.

Honestly, with that delicious variety in plant-based milk alternatives, we’re often wondering why people even choose cow’s milk anymore.

But which milk alternative is the best in coffee? There is no one-size-fits-all answer here because this really depends on your taste preference.

One thing is for sure, we neither like our non-dairy milk to be too fatty nor too watery (think canned coconut milk or thin rice milk).

Best Non-Dairy Milk for Lattes

  • Soy milk — ubiquitous, froths well, is easy to handle and has a great nutritional profile.
  • Almond milk — second most common at cafés, can have a bitter-ish taste; homemade tastes a lot better than most store-bought varieties.
  • Oat milk — comes closest to dairy in terms of texture and taste, great starting point.
  • Coconut milk — definitely adds a different taste to your coffee; don’t use canned!
  • Rice milk — neutral taste, low fat content and low in calories; makes coffee more watery than creamy.
  • Pea milk — new on the market, high in protein, closely mimics the taste of dairy milk.
  • Hemp milk — up and coming plant-based alternative that’s creamier than soy milk and tastes somewhat like almond milk.

As you can see, there are so many great choices that make it easier than ever before to ditch dairy!

What Does Almond Milk Latte Taste Like

Almond milk latte tastes different than dairy milk latte. Depending on the exact milk you choose, it can have a nuttier taste and won’t seem as “neutral” to you if you’re used to dairy milk. 

If you cannot stand soy milk, you might be convinced that almond milk is actually pretty good in coffee. Try different brands, sweetened and unsweetened varieties, or even make your own at home! You can find the easy recipe below.

Health Benefits of Almond vs Dairy Milk

There are several reasons why you would want to choose almond milk over dairy milk. The plant-based alternative is naturally lactose-free and often low in calories.

Almonds are high in antioxidants, vitamins B + E, contain iron and lower blood sugar levels as well as blood pressure. Instead of mostly saturated fat that’s found in animal products (including dairy milk), almond milk is overall low in fat while also offering some fiber.

It supports healthier hormone levels since there are no bovine hormones in almond milk and it regulates insulin levels.

But there are more things that we love about almond milk apart from the health aspect. It doesn’t cause animal suffering compared to what happens in the dairy industry (wonderful little video by Ed Winters here), it’s much better for the environment and it can easily be made at home!

Depending on how rich your almond milk is and whether or not you choose to sweeten your vegan beverage, almond milk latte may be as low in energy as 88 calories per 16 oz (425 g) serving. 

This makes it very weight loss friendly compared to richer lattes — the same size of a 2% milk caffè latte from Starbucks, for example, offers 190 calories.

And let’s not forget the sugar, syrup or whipped cream that’s often added to these delicious beverages! Not judging or anything, but don’t underestimate these rich dessert-like drinks.

How to Make a Sugar Free Almond Milk Latte

If you want to make a sugar-free almond latte, you need to either have a good store-bought almond milk or make your own almond creamer at home.

Our simple recipe below requires only 4 ingredients, a blender and not more than a few minutes to make.

Actually, you don’t even need a frother to make foamy almond milk for your latte or cappuccino! We used to have a frothing wand in the past that was surely convenient but when it broke, we just started using our blender instead and have been too lazy to get a new foamer again (don’t judge).

Luckily, if you don’t own a good blender to froth your almond milk, you can use any other method and tool that’s available to you. Find a quick guide for that below.

To make a hot and cozily spiced vegan almond latte, you can add some ground cinnamon and cardamom right when making your frothy almond milk creamer or sprinkle them on the foam.

Feel free to omit these spices for a straight forward vanilla almond latte — just froth your homemade almond milk using your blender, pour it in a cup and add the espresso shots. Let’s take a look at how easy it is to make your own dairy-free creamer!

Easy Sugar-Free Vanilla Almond Creamer

One very common question we get is “which dairy-free creamer do you use?”. The answer is that we never buy vegan creamer at the store — we just make our own healthy version at home within a few minutes.

All you need for this delicious sugar-free almond creamer are blanched almonds, dates and a little bit of vanilla — soak overnight, then blend until smooth and strain with a nut milk bag.

For a richer version, just use the homemade almond milk mixture as it is without removing the pulp. 

We like to do this sometimes but usually, we’ll just get out our nut milk bag and quickly separate the liquid from the pulp — you can use the grainy by-product for baking within the next few days.

Can You Froth Almond Milk?

Yes, almond milk has some great frothing properties! For best results, we recommend using a good amount of high-quality almonds to make some rich almond milk at home.

The more fat and protein in your non-dairy milk, the easier it will be to froth! But temperature is also an important factor.

According to the Perfect Daily Grind, your almond milk should ideally be heated to around 150-160 °F (65-70° C). The temperature of your milk can be your best friend in adjusting your final foam level!

To froth almond milk in your blender, you need to pour the warm milk into the jar, then blend on medium speed until frothy. Make sure to cover the lid properly! Depending on the quality of your blender, you end up with fairly nice and uniform foam.

Almond Milk Latte or Cappuccino?

The main difference between these two delicious vegan beverages is the ratio of steamed milk and foam. 

While they have a lot in common, a cappuccino has more foam to cover the surface of your drink while the latte focuses more on steamed almond milk with just a touch of foam on top.

Since we often just eyeball our recipes, the result can end up being somewhere in the middle. It just depends on how well we can turn our warm almond milk into a frothy foam and how much patience we have that particular morning.

How to Make Iced Almond Milk Latte

If you’re looking to make an iced almond milk latte, it’s best to use espresso that’s been chilled — or use some cold brew to make an iced almond milk coffee.

For best results, you may want to chill the glass you’re going to be using for about half an hour. We like to blend our cold brew or espresso with some ice cubes and the almond milk creamer to create a frappe but if you don’t have a high-speed blender, here’s what you can do.

Fill your glass with some ice cubes, pour the espresso and sugar-free almond milk creamer over them, give it a stir and enjoy right away!

Make your own easy sugar-free vanilla almond creamer and create delicious dairy-free latte at home! No matter if it’s a cozily spiced warm almond milk latte or an iced coffee with homemade almond milk, this delicious beverage can be enjoyed year-round. Made in 10 minutes, it’s naturally dairy-free, sugar-free and surprisingly easy to froth!


Ingredients

Almond Milk Creamer

  • 1 cup almonds, soaked (140 g)
  • 2 cups water (480 ml)
  • 2-3 dry pitted dates, chopped
  • 1 vanilla bean, seeds only
  • Pinch of salt

Hot Almond Latte

  • 2 cups almond milk creamer (480 ml)
  • 2 espresso shots
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • ¼ tsp cardamom (optional)

Iced Almond Milk Coffee

  • 2 cups almond milk creamer (480 ml)
  • 2 espresso shots, chilled
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 5-6 ice cubes

Instructions

Homemade Almond Milk Creamer

  1. Add the almonds, dates and water into a lidded jar and soak overnight. Choose either 2 or 3 dates, depending on the desired sweetness.
  2. When you’re ready to make your almond milk creamer, drain the soaked almonds and dates. Then transfer them into the blender and add the vanilla, water and salt. Process to obtain a creamy, dense mixture.
  3. Use a nut milk bag or cheesecloth to separate the pulp from the liquid – don’t throw away the almond pulp, you can use it for cookies or vegan cheesecake.

Hot Almond Vanilla Latte

  1. Pour the almond milk creamer into a small pot and warm it up over low heat. Alternatively, you can use your microwave.
  2. Now, place the warm almond milk into your blender and blend on medium speed for around 15 seconds to obtain a frothy, creamy consistency.
  3. Pour into glasses or cups, add the espresso shots and sprinkle with ground cinnamon and cardamom for a cozy touch.

Iced Almond Milk Coffee

  1. Add all of the ingredients into the blender and blend for at least 10 seconds to obtain an ice-cold creamy liquid.
  2. Pour into glasses and serve immediately!

Notes

  • Use blanched almonds for the best texture of your dairy-free creamer.
  • For a stronger almond latte, use 4 shots of espresso instead of 2.
  • If you don’t have a high-speed blender to make your iced almond milk coffee, simply pour your almond creamer and chilled espresso over some ice cubes in a glass and call it a day.
  • If you cannot find vanilla beans, you can use 1 teaspoon vanilla extract instead.
